Shirey Recognized as 2007 Outstanding Cooperator

Sam Shirey was recognized by the Scioto Soil and Water Conservation District (SWCD) as the 2007 Outstanding Cooperator.  Annually, the Scioto SWCD recognizes local residents for their commitment to conservation and responsible use of the land.  Shirey’s dedication to improving his agriculture practice and installation of conservation practices on his land made him an obvious choice for the Scioto SWCD’s Cooperator of the Year Award.

Sam and his wife Thelma manage a beef cattle operation near Otway.  In recent years, the Shireys have implemented several conservation practices, including a prescribed grazing plan, as well as installing livestock waterers, an access road, and a heavy use pad for winter feeding.  These conservation practices have been essential in preventing soil runoff from the farm and protecting water quality.
