Northwest High School Participates in
Envirothon Northwest High School sent two teams to represent Scioto County at the Area 5 Envirothon, which was held at Paint Creek Lake in Highland County in April. Nearly 60 teams from 17 Southern and Central Ohio Counties competed in this year’s event. The efforts of Northwest High School at this year’s Envirothon proved to be the best performance by a Scioto County school in more than a decade. Team Advisors Marcella Kuhn and Scott Thompson spent months preparing their students for the Envirothon. An outdoor, academic competition for high school students, the Envirothon tests students’ knowledge of aquatics, environmental issues, forestry, soils, and wildlife. Kuhn and Thompson dedicated many hours after school, teaching and familiarizing their students with the concepts addressed during the Envirothon competition.
The Envirothon provides a fun and practical method for educating young people about nature and the environment. Students leave the competition having had a positive experience and through their preparation, have a broader understanding of natural areas and the world around them. Several Northwest High School students are already looking forward to competing in next year’s Envirothon. In 2011, the Area 5 Envirothon will be held in Lawrence County. For information about the Envirothon or to learn how to get your high school registered for next year’s competition, contact Jeff Montavon, jeff.montavon@oh.nacdnet.net, at (740) 259-9231. In Ohio, the Envirothon is sponsored by the Ohio Federation of Soil and Water Conservation Districts in cooperation with the Ohio Department of Natural Resources. In Scioto County, the Scioto Soil and Water Conservation District registers teams and offers assistance to schools participating in the event. Natural resource and environmental specialists from several agencies, learning institutions, and businesses develop the Envirothon questions and manage the testing stations. Osco Industries and Farm Credit Services donated the registration fees to send both teams to the event.
