Envirothon 2010 -
Paint Creek Lake, Bainbridge, Ohio

On April 27, 2010, more than 400
students from seventeen Southern and Central Ohio Counties will
visit Paint Creek Lake to participate in the Area 5 Envirothon. A
competitive, academic event for high school students, the Envirothon
is an excellent tool to teach students about the environment and
give them an opportunity to apply their knowledge in the field.
To prepare for the Envirothon, teams of students spend months
studying natural resources topics that include aquatics, forestry,
soil, wildlife, and a current environmental issue. At the event,
teams visit five testing stations to answer questions relating to
the topics. The top four scoring teams then advance to the Ohio
Envirothon to compete against schools from Ohio’s other four
Envirothon regions.
Schools are permitted to send two teams of three to five members to
the contest, however; teams with fewer than five members are not
eligible to advance to the state contest. In 2009, Northwest High
School sent two teams to Highbanks Metro Park in Columbus to compete in the
Envirothon. With the event being held closer to Scioto County, it
creates a great opportunity for local
schools to get involved in the event.
Students or teachers interested in participating in the event should
contact the Scioto Soil and Water Conservation District at (740)
259-9231. To be eligible to participate in the Envirothon, students
must be enrolled in grades 9 through 12 and attend the same school.
Upon registration, teams will receive materials to prepare for the
competition. Teams must be registered by March.
Every student should have the opportunity to participate in the
Envirothon. The Envirothon is a fun experience that allows students
to take a hand-on approach to learning about the environment.
