Northwest High School
represented Scioto County at the Area 5 Envirothon on April 28. More
than 70 teams from Southern and Central Ohio visited Highbanks Metro
Park in Columbus to participate in the environmental competition.
Advisor Marcella Kuhn worked with her students for several months to
prepare them for the event, introducing many new environmental and
natural resources topics.
An outdoor, academic
event for high school students, the Envirothon tests students’
knowledge of Aquatics, Environmental Issues, Forestry, Soils, and
Wildlife. Annually, hundreds of students spend months preparing and
then compete in the event in hope of advancing their teams to the
Ohio Envirothon, which invites the top four scoring teams from each
of Ohio’s five Envirothon regions to participate.

in the Ohio Envirothon in June. |
Athens High School placed
first overall in the contest. Bexley High School from
Columbus, as well as Peebles and Piketon High Schools will
advance to the State Envirothon to be held at Kenyon College
in Gambier, Ohio this June.
The Envirothon provides a fun,
creative means for educating young people about nature and
the environment. Several students from the Portsmouth team
are looking forward to competing in next year’s Envirothon. |
| Students leave
the competition having had a positive experience and through
their preparation, have a broader understanding of natural
areas and the world around them. |
In Ohio, the
Envirothon is sponsored by the Ohio Federation of Soil and Water
Conservation Districts (OFSWCD) in cooperation with the Ohio
Department of Natural Resources (ODNR). In Scioto County, the Scioto
SWCD registers teams and offers assistance to schools participating
in the event. Natural resource and environmental specialists from
several agencies, learning institutions, and businesses develop the
Envirothon questions and manage the testing stations. Osco
Industries of Portsmouth donated the registration fees to send both
teams to the event.
The Scioto SWCD will
host the 2008 Envirothon. This will be the first time the event will
be held in Scioto County since 1996.
