What is the Envirothon? A
competitive, outdoor, academic event, the Envirothon is designed to stimulate,
reinforce and enhance interest in the environment and natural resources
among high school students. Teams of five students compete by answering
questions about Aquatics, Forestry, Soils, Wildlife, and Environmental
Issues. Natural Resource professionals, college professors, and other people
write site-specific question for each site prior to the competition.
In
the Spring, the Area 5 Envirothon is held in one of the area’s seventeen
counties. Students work as a team, competing against teams from other schools
throughout the area. Generally, the competition runs from morning to early
afternoon. At the end of the day, scores will be tallied and the four teams
with the highest scores will advance to compete in the Ohio Envirothon
that is held in June. Ohio’s top scoring team will then compete in the
Canon Envirothon against teams from other states and some Canadian Provinces.
Schools
are permitted to send two teams to the area Envirothon. In order to be
eligible to compete in the Ohio Envirothon, each team must have five students.
Teams with fewer than five students will be allowed to compete at the area
Envirothon, but cannot advance.
In Ohio, the Ohio Federation of
Soil and Water Conservation Districts (OFSWCD) with cooperation from the
Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) sponsors the Envirothon.
