Introducing kids to fishing can be a fun and rewarding experience. Fishing not only gives young people an opportunity to enjoy the outdoors and learn about the environment, but also helps build self-esteem, motor skills, and a connection to the community.

To help children learn techniques needed to begin fishing, the Scioto Soil and Water Conservation District (SWCD) will collaborate with Shawnee State Park to host a Passport to Fishing Program on Saturday, October 23.

Passport to Fishing, a free program developed by the Ohio Division of Wildlife, teaches youth ages 17 and under basic fishing skills such as casting, knot tying, fish habitat and other local issues. After the sessions, participants will have the opportunity to use their new skills and go fishing.  State law requires participants ages 16 and older to have a fishing license to participate in the fishing activity.

The program will begin at Noon at the Shawnee State Park Nature Center on State Route 125 northwest of Friendship. The event is being held in conjunction with the park's Fall Kiddie Trout Derby.

Passport to Fishing is sponsored by the Scioto Soil and Water Conservation District, Shawnee State Park, and Ohio Division of Wildlife.
