Deciduous Trees Black Walnut (Juglans nigra) This large nut tree, reaching up to 75 ft. at maturity, is valued for timber, veneer and furniture. It has dark green compound leaves and produces delicious nuts that are preferred by wildlife. Grows well in most locations, but prefers fertile, deep soils. Sugar Maple (Acer saccharum) This large shade tree, which can reach heights over 100 ft., is the cornerstone of the maple syrup industry. The medium green leaves can turn brilliant yellow, orange or red in the fall. Prefers partial to full sun and well-drained soil. Excellent shade tree.
Black Cherry (Prunus
serotina) Commercially important tree growing to 60+ ft. at
maturity; commonly used for lumber, veneer and furniture. Leaves are
dark green in summer and yellowish in fall. The small black fruits
provide food for a variety of birds and mammals and are often used
to make wine and jelly. Tolerates a wide variety of growing
conditions. Eastern White Pine (Pinus strobus) An outstanding timber pine due to its large size (80+ ft. at maturity) and fast growing ability. It has long, soft, light green needles and grows well in many soil types. Often used for windbreaks, wildlife habitat, lumber and Christmas trees. Prefers full sun, but can tolerate some shade. Not salt tolerant. Colorado Blue Spruce (Picea pungens var. glauca) This large evergreen with a moderate growth rate can reach heights of 100+ ft. It has short, stout, prickly, bluish green to bright, silvery blue needles. Prefers fertile, moist soil in full sun, but will tolerate dry, well-drained areas as well. Valued as ornamentals, windbreaks and Christmas trees. Norway Spruce (Picea abies) One of the fastest growing spruces! Reaches 100 ft. at maturity. This extremely attractive evergreen has strong, distinctive, sweeping branches and shiny green ½ to 1 inch long, flat needles. Grows well on most sites and is used for ornamentals, windbreaks and Christmas trees. Canadian Hemlock (Tsuga canadensis) An attractive, graceful evergreen tree that has a narrow pyramidal shape when young and then becomes broader with age. The short, dark green needles have two white bands on the underside. Makes a beautiful specimen and can also be pruned for formal or informal hedges. Grows 60-75 ft. at maturity. Grows best in cool, moist locations. White Spruce (Picea glauca) A relatively fast growing, medium-size spruce with short, pale green needles. Useful for windbreaks, Christmas trees and specimen trees. Tolerant of many moisture and growing conditions, but grows best in full sun. Needs very little shearing. Grows 60-75 ft. at maturity.
Douglas Fir (Pseudotsuga
menziesii) A tree that is mainly used for screening and
landscaping purposes. This tree also makes a very nice Christmas
Tree. The needles are green to blue green and are soft to the touch.
Trees can reach a mature height of 60 feet. Prefers a sunny location
with a moist soil, will not thrive on poorly drained or compacted
soils.
Homeowner’s Tree Packet Eastern Redbud (Cercis canadensis) A small, native, deciduous tree that grows 20-30 ft. tall. Showy purplish-pink flowers appear in late April to early May. The heart-shaped leaves are dark green in summer and change to yellow in fall. The 2-3 inch long, dark brown seed pods may persist through the winter. Makes a worthwhile addition to any landscape. American Sweetgum (Liquidambar styraciflua) Tall, relatively fast growing tree reaches 60+ ft. when mature. Leaves change from deep glossy green in summer to variations of yellows, purples and reds in the fall. Excellent tree for large areas where the roots have plenty of room to develop. Grows on a variety of sites, but prefers moist bottomlands and full to partial sun. Tulip Poplar (Liriodendron tulipifera) A fast growing tree with bright green leaves that resemble tulip flowers in profile and turn golden yellow in fall. Greenish-yellow flowers are carried high in the tree. Likes full sun, and is adaptable to a variety of soil conditions. Mature tree height is 70-90 ft. Native, deciduous, large shrub or small tree with grayish-green
summer foliage and yellowish-orange to deep rusty red fall color.
Small white flowers in late March turn into edible blue-black
fruit that attracts birds. Grows to 25-30 ft. tall. Prefers sun or
shade.
Wildlife Tree Packet Blackhaw Viburnum (Viburnum prunifolium) A large tree or multi-stemmed shrub with impressive dark green foliage in summer months changing in the autumn to a purple, rich red burgundy color. Flowers are creamy white and bloom in early May, followed by a droopy blue-black edible fruit. Grows 12-15 ft. high. Adapts to many soils. Prefers sun or shade. Hardy and easy to grow. Dark green leaves in summer turn yellow to red in the fall. American Hazelnut (Corylus americana) This medium-size shrub with rounded heart shaped leaves grows 7-10 ft. tall. Edible brown nuts provide food for game birds, deer and small mammals. Prefers sun and moist soils, but tolerates high pH soils. Common Pawpaw (Asimina triloba) This small native tree can form small colonies under natural conditions. Leaves turn from dark green in summer to yellow in fall. Large edible fruit contains many large seeds and the fruit is consumed by a variety of animals. Prefers moist, fertile soil and full sun. Tolerates shade. Golden St. John's Wort (Hypericum frondosum) Small, 3-4 ft. tall shrub with similar spread. Handsome, distinct, bluish-green foliage and reddish brown exfoliating bark. Solitary, bright yellow flowers are up to 2 inches across and are borne in June and July. The fruit is a reddish-brown capsule. Sourwood (Oxydendrum arboreum) This small, native tree has a mature height of 25-30 ft. Small creamy-white flowers are borne in 4-10 inch long panicles in June to early July. The rich, iridescent green leaves turn vibrant yellow, purple, and red in fall. This all-season ornamental makes an excellent specimen tree. Prefers well-drained, slightly acidic soil and full to partial sun. Lynwood Gold Forsythia (Forsythia x intermedia ‘Lynwood Gold’) A vigorous growing, beautiful deciduous shrub with long, arching branches that reaches heights of 8 ft. Spectacular pale to deep yellow flowers in late March or early April. Grows well in almost any soil but needs plenty of water. Use as a specimen or screen plant, or as a hedge when planted 2-4 ft. apart. Red Osier Dogwood (Cornus sericea) Multi-stemmed shrub grows to 8 ft. Brilliant red colored twigs add to its four season appeal. Flowers are in 2 inch diameter white cymes that are borne in late May to early June. Leaves turn from dark green in summer to reddish-purple in fall. Adaptable to a variety of soil and climatic conditions.
Mountain Laurel
(Kalmia latifolia)
Handsome broadleaf evergreen shrub that produces large, beautiful
pinkish-white flowers in early summer. One of the most beautiful
plants in flower. Dark green leaves can be 2-5 inches long and up to
1½ inches wide. Grows 6-8 ft. tall. Prefers full-sun to light shade
and moist, well-drained, acidic soil. Groundcover English Ivy (Hedera helix ‘Thorndale’) Evergreen groundcover with dark green leaves. Multiple garden uses ranging from a low growing groundcover to a high climbing vine. Grows well in sun or shade and is drought tolerant. Height is 6-8 inches at maturity. Plant 8-12 inches apart. 100 plants. Pachysandra (Pachysandra terminalis) This groundcover has deep green glossy foliage and a compact habit. Grows well in sun or shade. Height is 6-9 inches at maturity. Plant 6-12 inches apart. 100 plants. Crownvetch (Coronilla varia) A fast growing, emerald green, perennial groundcover for banks, slopes and problem areas. Produces pinkish-white flowers from June through first frost. Use for severe erosion control measures. Grows 12-18 inches tall in sun or partial shade. Plant 2 ft. apart. 72 plants.
Fruits, Berries, and Mushrooms Yellow Delicious Apple Trees (2 trees) A large golden apple that ripens late with a fine, sweet flavor. Trees are very vigorous and bear quite young. Home use for eating, pies, sauces, and preserves. Fruit trees need a minimum of 6-8 hours of sunlight daily and plenty of water. They are not drought tolerant. (Pollinate with Red Delicious, Red Jonathan, Early Harvest, etc.) Early Elberta Peach Trees (2 trees) Still the most popular peach on the market, and universally planted. Yellow freestone of excellent quality; juicy, firm but tender, excellent fresh, canned or frozen. Tree is hardy, productive and disease resistant. Plant in full sun in well drained soils. Ripens in late August. Black Satin Thornless Blackberries (5 canes) Self-fruitful, high yielding, late-season thornless blackberry. Large berries taste great fresh or frozen. Grows well in slightly acidic, loamy soil. Requires at least 6-8 hours of sunlight per day. Plants should be spaced 6-8 ft. apart in rows that are 10-12 ft. apart. A two or three wire trellis system aids in supporting the semi-erect stems.
