Watersheds

A watershed is a region or area draining to a particular watercourse or body of water. Watersheds can be small or large, and most are interconnected, eventually draining to the ultimate waterbodies-bays, gulfs, or oceans.

Much of the United States is in the Mississipi River watershed with two-thirds of the United States lying within the larger watershed that drains to the Gulf of Mexico. Ohio is divided into two major watersheds-Lake Erie and the Ohio River. Runoff from precipitation in Ohio will flows to one of these waterbodies. Covering over half the state, the Ohio River Watershed has a drainage area covering over 200,000 square miles from Pennsylvania to Illinois.

Scioto County is divided into three major watersheds: Little Scioto River/Tygarts Creek, Lower Scioto River, and Ohio Brush Creek/White Oak. Still the county is further divided into eight smaller watersheds: Brush Creek, Brush Creek-South Fork, Carey's Run, Little Scioto River, Pine Creek, Scioto River, and two seperate watersheds classified as Ohio River Tributaries. Each of these watersheds drains into one of the three larger watersheds in the county and eventually drains to the Ohio River.

Below is a watershed map of Scioto County. Each watershed is represented by a different color.
